The U.S. National Academies 2005 report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, painted “a daunting outlook for America if it were to continue on the perilous path it has been following in recent decades with regard to sustained competitiveness.” To take stock of progress on implementation of its recommendations, the original study committee reconvened in 2010 and produced the report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited: Approaching Category Five. The report concludes that the “…the most pervasive concern was considered to be the state of United States K-12 education…” Accordingly, the WSAS will devote its 2011 Annual Symposium to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Washington State, building on its 2010 annual symposium that focused on the science of early childhood learning. The scope of the 2011 symposium will encompass preschool, K-12 and higher education followed by a discussion of what WSAS can contribute to improving STEM education in Washington State.
